How do we estimate walking calories?

We estimate walking distance from step count and step length, then walking duration from your chosen speed. Calorie estimates use approximate MET (metabolic equivalent) values for level-ground walking. One MET represents resting energy expenditure.

Gross calories include resting energy during the walk. Net activity calories subtract that resting component. Neither number is a precise prediction of weight change.

Calories burned walking: examples by step count

Wondering how many calories you burn walking 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 steps? The estimates below use a 75 kg adult, moderate walking at about 4.8 km/h, an assumed step length of 0.72 metres and a MET value of 3.5. Your own result may differ.

5,0003.60 km197 kcal141 kcal
10,0007.20 km394 kcal281 kcal

Gross calories include energy used at rest during the walk. Extra activity calories exclude that resting component. Use the calculator above for an estimate based on your own weight, steps and walking pace.

Tips for a realistic walking routine

  • Start from your current comfortable level and increase gradually.
  • Choose a pace at which you can still talk, if suitable for your health and fitness.
  • Remember that food intake, sleep and consistency also affect weight management.
  • Track your progress over time rather than treating a calorie estimate as an exact measurement.

Frequently asked questions

Is this walking calories calculator free?

Yes. It works in your browser and does not require an account.

Is walking 10,000 steps enough to lose weight?

There is no universal step target that guarantees weight loss. Your overall activity and energy intake both matter. Read our daily steps guide.

How many calories are burned walking 2,000 steps?

For a 75 kg adult at a moderate pace, 2,000 steps might use about 79 gross calories, or 56 extra activity calories, using this calculator’s assumptions. Your weight, stride and pace can change the estimate.

Are the results exact?

No. The tool estimates level-ground walking using typical speeds and energy costs. Hills, carrying loads and individual differences can change actual expenditure.
